Suburb #39 Isaacs

Suburb number 39 was Isaacs in Woden land.

Isaacs, which really should be called Isaacs Isaacs, was named after the politician, Chief Justice and former Governor General of the same name. Beyond a rather repetitive name, Isaacs stands out for being an impressive linguist (speaking Russian, English, German, Italian, French, Greek, Hindustani and Chinese...so jealous!) and the first GG to actually live in Government House in Canberra. He is also well known for his written works on constitutional issues and his advocacy in opposition of Zionism.

The street theme here is 'educationists' - i.e. teachers, campaigners, academics etc.

Isaacs is a very hilly suburb with a very unexpected pine plantation (i.e. very mini Black Forrest) that runs along the hillside at the back of the suburbs. Not the prettiest views I have seen on my Canberra adventures but still a great place to wander and collect pine cones. Be prepared to work those leg muscles though getting up the hill! :p

Isaacs is also the land of very very big houses. The below example does not really do this justice as it only has two garages not four! But hopefully you get the idea...

But maybe they just do things big in Isaacs - the sign for the shops was certainly the biggest I have seen so far....but unfortunately the shops appear to have seen have lost in the 1980s. There is an Indian restaurant there that may nevertheless need to be tried at some point. The park around the corner is also pretty cute, though slide not up to recent standards, and from the look of other photos on the net lots of the original playground equipment has been removed/torn down :(

Apart from the pine plantation, there are also lovely little pathways and lots of flowers that make this a great place to wander in early spring.

Once house also gets kudos for a combination I hadn't seen before. Fake green grass with blue tiles. I think it actually kind of works. Certainly caught my attention anyway :)
